Title: Wet and Windy Weather: Protect Your Home from Water Damage

As we are experiencing wet and windy weather, it's essential to be proactive in protecting your home from potential water damage. Heavy rains and strong winds can lead to a host of issues, from minor leaks to significant flooding. At SERVPRO of Stevens Point, Wausau and Marshfield, we understand the importance of being prepared, and we're here to help you navigate the challenges of this unpredictable weather.

Understanding Water Damage Risks

Water damage can occur in various forms, including:

  • Roof Leaks: High winds can loosen shingles, allowing rainwater to seep into your home.
  • Basement Flooding: Saturated ground can lead to water entering through cracks or drainage issues.
  • Siding Damage: Wind-driven rain can penetrate your siding, causing moisture to accumulate inside walls.
  • Gutter Blockages: Debris can clog gutters, preventing proper drainage and leading to overflow.

Tips to Protect Your Home

Here are some steps you can take to minimize the risk of water damage:

  1. Inspect Your Roof: Check for loose or missing shingles, and ensure your roof is in good condition. Consider having a professional inspection if you notice any damage.

  2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris to ensure proper water flow. Downspouts should direct water at least six feet away from your foundation.

  3. Seal Windows and Doors: Check caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors. This can help prevent water from seeping in during heavy rains.

  4. Monitor Your Basement: If you have a basement, make sure it's equipped with a sump pump, especially those of you living in Marshfield where the soil is clay, and consider installing a water alarm to alert you of any rising water levels.

What to Do If You Experience Water Damage

If water damage does occur, it's crucial to act quickly:

  • Call your agent: Getting your agent involved asap helps to speed up the clean-up and remediation process.
  • Document Damage: Take photos for insurance purposes before starting any cleanup.

Flooded Basement This Stevens Point home’s basement flooded due to heavy rains.

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a few reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

Hey Honey, what's that water stain on the ceiling from?

6/6/2023 (Permalink)

A water stain in your home, especially on drywall, can be the start of a bigger problem.  While drywall is durable, it can sustain damage when exposed to water for too long.  If the damage is not addressed quickly, the structural integrity becomes compromised, causing it to become soft, weak, and susceptible to microbial growth.

Staining on drywall, especially on ceilings usually leads to a couple common causes in homes.  1.) Plumbing Fixtures – improper installation, wear and tear causing failures, aging of the fixtures themselves.  2.) Roof Leaks - improper installation, wear, and tear & aging.  You see the pattern.

The key to preventing microbial growth on drywall is to address the situation as quickly as possible.  Making sure that the affected area is dried out properly and that the humidity level is regulated to an acceptable level.  Putting a fan on the affected area although is helpful may not be enough depending on the level of moisture in the building materials.  Dehumidifiers are extremely helpful in regulating the humidity of the affected area and house in general.

The longer you wait, the chances of you having a bigger problem are highly likely.
