A water stain in your home, especially on drywall, can be the start of a bigger problem. While drywall is durable, it can sustain damage when exposed to water for too long. If the damage is not addressed quickly, the structural integrity becomes compromised, causing it to become soft, weak, and susceptible to microbial growth.
Staining on drywall, especially on ceilings usually leads to a couple common causes in homes. 1.) Plumbing Fixtures – improper installation, wear and tear causing failures, aging of the fixtures themselves. 2.) Roof Leaks - improper installation, wear, and tear & aging. You see the pattern.
The key to preventing microbial growth on drywall is to address the situation as quickly as possible. Making sure that the affected area is dried out properly and that the humidity level is regulated to an acceptable level. Putting a fan on the affected area although is helpful may not be enough depending on the level of moisture in the building materials. Dehumidifiers are extremely helpful in regulating the humidity of the affected area and house in general.
The longer you wait, the chances of you having a bigger problem are highly likely.
